It doesn't slice through thick roots like a hot knife in butter, but it will hack away at them until you can do more damage with a saw or clippers. What it is great for are those big taprooted weeds that are almost impossible to pull. I am "blessed" with thistles, dandelions, and other weeds that have taproots to China, and also my soil is hard as a rock clay.
