Gearloft 4 x 8 Garage Storage - Lag screws weak

While I love the product, the lag bolts for the ceiling mounts snap off when cranking it into the garage studs. I had to go out to the hardware store and get new lag bolts to finish the installation. The lags snap off right a the transition from screw to the smooth bolt. The rest of the product is very good!

Great product

Sturdy and attractive storage solution. Take time to accurately locate the wall studs and ceiling joists, the rest of the install will then be no problem.

O/H Garage Storage

Can be installed with one person, but, I highly recommend two people to install. Instructions were clear and relatively easy to install. Looks great!

The Gladiator Overhead Gear Loft Storage 2'x8' Shelf is well made and comes with strong hardware. I am confident it is quite secure.

Great Product, Poor Hardware

I love the storage rack and it's relatively easy to install, but...the existing issue with the lag bolts breaking is real. I bought two racks, no issues installing the first one. When I started the second rack, two of the first three bolts broke...everything was the same as the first (installer, materials, etc). This is a great storage rack, very sturdy and well build. You can use it as a 2 by 4 or a 4 by 4 rack.

what happened after covid?!

Reviews look great until about lockdown time periods (when i ordered mine). Took 3 months to get but bot upset about that i get circumstances... Instructions not great but most arent.. Where i got frustrated and upset: -just about very lagbolt broke (ANGRY) I tried larger pilot holes and drill settings and drills. Ultimately i went and bought the cheapest similar sized lagbolts from lowes and issue disappeared. Also some washers that i think should be a part of the install. (OVER IT.....

Buyer beware!

We purchased this unit and after careful installation before loading it up we did a safety test to ensure the unit was secure. One person who weighed in around 185 lbs. hung on it ( it’s supposed to hold 700 lb) and three of the lag bolts that were secured into the ceiling rafters ( the bolts came with the unit) sheared off at exactly the same point in all three bolts. When it let loose from the rafters it hit my husbands shoulder. After calling our local Lowe’s manager about this safety issue...

Poor quality, Lag bolts broke when mounting.

Be careful with this product, when mounting the brackets that hold the weight of the shelf to the ceiling joist, the lag bolts broke during installation. This is a serious problem if the bolts weaken during installation but don't break until under load. I would suggest that you don't use the lag bolts supplied with the product and purchase known quality bolts to complete your installation or pass on this product completely. Poor design and flimsy quality

This unit is very poorly designed and the provided hardware is questionable. The bottom panels are bolted together through two threaded bungs on each side...so you are basically trying to thread through two separate pieces simultaneously. (image trying to put two nuts on one bolt at the same time that is not even long enough to fit both nuts fully) The supplied hardware is also so short that it only bites into the second panel by a few threads.

It could be better

Cons: Five weeks for delivery. Instructions not correct. One lag bolt broke off. I had to modify it to fit over my garage door. Pros: Nice finish

Nothing but problems

Product shipped with wrong instructions and first 2 lag bolts snapped during install. Not worth the hassle. Buy the Fleximount instead.

Picked up this product and started putting it together right away. The overall quality is great and so far seems solid and good quality product. I do have some concerns about the instructions included with this product and more so the packing list. I will first address the instructions included. Horrible Documentation and Missing Parts

So after purchasing this, I had to make some slight relocation of screws because the documentation was detailed incorrectly, this is according to the Manufacturer which I contacted. The item arrived with missing a handful of missing screws if you were to follow the instruction down to the details. Great product - except for the lag bolts

I purchased three of the 4×8 kits. I chose pick up in store. The kits arrived early and with all equipment. I read the reviews about the lag bolt issues but decided to purchase anyway. Installing the first ceiling brace and on the second lag bolt it snapped about 3/4 of an inch from being against the brace. I decided at that point to go purchase proper lag bolts, an additional cost of $76 to cover the three kits (12 lag bolts per kit). The rest of the product is solid and sturdy.

Very sturdy

This works really good, and is very sturdy. Recommend. With that said, Two things wrong with this, which I believe are minor. One is the bolts that secure it to the ceiling are poor quality. I drilled pilot holes per the instructions and the first two bolts sheared off about 1/4 of an inch from being seated flush. If you ream the holes 3 to 4 times, they won't break. Design was not capable of being built.

Maybe I got a bad batch or something, but the four racks are supposed to be attached using fasteners that screw into threads that are welded to the opposite part. On mine, the holes were all threaded at the same locations, so two holes were threaded on both sides and two holes had no threads at all. All four racks were identical - there was no way to assembly the product. I took it back to the store and got a full refund.

Ruined by Poor Hardware (Lag Bolts)

This is a nice product that is completely let down by the lag bolts needed to attach the structure to ceiling. I put in the first lag bolt using a cordless drill and when 90% installed (not yet tight) the head of the screw broke off. I decided to try installing the next one by hand using a socket and ratchet and the exact same thing occurred. See photos. I would highly recommend buy better grade lag bolts locally, preferably not produced in China.
