I expected to need only two coats, but I ended up applying three or more because the compound shrank quite a bit after drying. The shrinkage made the job more time-consuming than anticipated. If you're working on deeper repairs, be prepared to apply extra coats to get a smooth finish. That said, the compound sands well..
