Ratings & Reviews for Cabot Tintable Neutral Base Solid Exterior Wood Stain and Sealer in One ( 1-quart )
Ratings may include incentivized customer reviews.
What Customers Are Saying
The Cabot Solid Color Deck Stain received mixed reviews. Many customers reported the stain provided great coverage, was easy to apply, and resulted in a beautiful, refreshed appearance. However, a significant number experienced issues with the stain peeling, cracking, and failing prematurely, often within 1-2 years. The long-term durability and weathering resistance seem inconsistent, with the stain not holding up well in high-traffic or high-moisture areas.

I like this stain. It spreads nice, adheres quickly, and looks great... However; solid stains and decks are not great partners. Decks take a beating in the sun and rain and therefore, require continued maintenance... If you have a new deck, I suggest a semi-solid oil the first year in your choice of color... Then, every year or two after, (depending on where you live and the elements your deck is subject to,) I would follow it up with a clear oil thereafter. This way the pigment doesn't build up...

Beautiful color and easy application
Would Recommend[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My deck is so large that I was afraid it would be difficult to stain. The color and easy application of the Cabot stain was wonderful in that it has protected my deck for two years. Without re-application yearly, I have saved money, but the beauty of the teak color is outstanding. I have wraparound porches and the stain covered the deck with fewer cans than expected. I like Cabot products and will continue using them in the future.

Dark brick
Would Recommend[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Cabot stain is the only one that has lasted very well. All the other ones have needed redoing every year. I am getting three to four years out of Cabot!

Great coverage! Tough finish when dry- like nails!
Would Recommend[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have bought 4- 5 gallons of solid color stain. Colors: Federal Blue and Frontier. Spreads great with very tough finish when dried and easy to clean up. I have used the decking stain and the siding and fence stain. Would buy it again.

Looks good at first, doesn't last.
I bought this stain in both white and grey for my deck as well as a competitor brand. The Cabot branded stain has failed and is peeling in a number of places where the other brand has not. All the wood was sanded and prepped to accept the stain. 3 coats were applied to achieve satisfactory coverage. It looked great at first, but 2 years in and it looks terrible. Leaves and dirt also leave marks on it that are difficult to clean off.

Cabot Deck paint is Terrible - Does not Hold up
Very Disappointed by Cabot's Solid Color Acrylic Stain and Sealer. Purchased 4 cans in two colors: Gray for the deck floor and White for the deck railing. The gray has held up HOWEVER the white color stain has been a mess. Check out several photos of our deck railing. We scrubbed and sanded our deck boards and rails, prepped and painted them last year. Since then the white paint has cracked and chipped off in several places. Purchased Cabot paint and applicator tools to make sure we applied it ...

Terrible product that discolors and peels
Would Not RecommendWe replaced all of the wood on our deck and waited 12 months for it to age before purchasing this product. We power washed the deck and allowed it to dry over several days. The product is more like watery, thin paint than stain. Within 6 months, several boards began to discolor as if mildewed and others were peeling. We have done several touch-ups on the peeling sections, but the peeling continues thoughout. This deck does not see a lot of traffic, so the deterioration is baffling. We had ...

Love it!
Would Recommend[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My husband and I researched several products and decided to use the Deck Correct. We power washed first and allowed it to dry completely before jumping into our weekend project. We both love how easy it brushed on and how well it covered the surface. We even used it on the grandkids rock climbing wall and fort swingset. Choosing a combination of the Slate and Canyon, we are loving how it turned out. Some stated that the slate was blue, but I...

Looks GREAT —— 🚨Doesn’t last. No durability 🚩
Would Not RecommendI bought 14 gallons and put at least 2 coats on my 700 sqft deck. Looked brand new and beautiful. Then, I noticed during the spring rains, the wood would swell a little, but I can see dark lines in the grain. This were not noticeable last September. Now, almost a year has passed and I have worn areas down to the wood again. Sure a scuff on the step is acceptable, but I have spots on my deck that we haven’t even walked on, disappointing. Hand brushed and rolled on September 2022 💔

Love the color!
Would Recommend[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I kept putting off staining our back deck but our front deck looks amazing and I did it last year! I wanted more of a uniform color and Cabots didn’t disappoint! It looks great and we’ve received a lot of compliments on it!

Acrylic oil stain.
Would Recommend[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Used the Cabot solid color acrylic oil stain on a dock which is two feet above the water level on a lake. I followed the wood preparation and application instructions. It looked good right after staining. Less than a year later it began to peel. My opinion is that this acrylic oil stain does not last in applications that are near or around water or any high humidity areas. To solve the problem I stripped the wood bare and restrained with Cabot...
