Ratings & Reviews for Cabot Tintable Neutral Base Solid Exterior Wood Stain and Sealer in One ( 1-quart )
Ratings may include incentivized customer reviews.
What Customers Are Saying
The Cabot Solid Color Deck Stain received mixed reviews. Many customers reported the stain provided great coverage, was easy to apply, and resulted in a beautiful, refreshed appearance. However, a significant number experienced issues with the stain peeling, cracking, and failing prematurely, often within 1-2 years. The long-term durability and weathering resistance seem inconsistent, with the stain not holding up well in high-traffic or high-moisture areas.

Would Not RecommendI don't normally write reviews but am so disappointed with this, I had to share. I had my deck painted a solid Mission Brown a month ago. My dog uses the deck to get into the house and she tracks dirt on it with her. I cannot get the dirt off at all. I hoped a good rain or using a hard spray on the hose would do it but it didn't . So I purchased a fringe mop and used some deck wash and it still did not come off. It looks horrible now and is getting worse. The attached picture shows two boards t...

Disappointed with this product
Would Not RecommendLast year we spent a week staining our wood fence and deck with your product. We used a solid color stain on both. We used a powerwasher to clean all surfaces before staining. Looked great initially, however after a year we are noticing peeling on the fence. We thought the stain would hold up for longer than one year. We stained in July of 2014 and had a very cold winter. Not happy with what we are seeing this year.

fading and peeling
Would Not RecommendI have stained 24 decks for our condo's three years ago. Well now all 24 are peeling and badly faded. They were cleaned thoroughly and were dry and I only stained on days where the temperature was under 80. degrees. Now we have to scrape and prep all 24 decks and re-stain them. All our condo owners are very upset with Cabot because of the cost to re-do all 24 decks and railings and stairs. Cabot stain used to be good when it was thin as water and soaked into the wood, but this new formula isn't ...

Not Happy.
Would Not RecommendDeck was built in 2012. After a year, it was prepped and two coats of your Semi-solid stain was used. After the winter, it showed much peeling. I resanded and powerwashed and this time used the Cabot solid stain. The pictures show the same result. I don't think this should need to be done every year. This area is sun in the summer and snow in the winter. Please advise as I can't afford to be repurchasing every year.

We expected this product to wear much better
Would Not RecommendWe followed the instructions for preparation and application, and the deck looked great for the first summer and fall. Now that we are at the next spring after a winter that wasn't particularly harsh, large chunks of the paint have peeled and we will need to redo the entire floor surface of the deck and stairs. We are very disappointed in this product, as we expected it to wear more than one year for its price.

Whats with the bubbles?
Would Not RecommendI live in Maui and have a very large wood deck that was once stained with regular semi transparent stain. Over the years it was apparent that the wood needed to be protected better. That is when I started buying Cabot solid color decking stains. It seems at first it held up pretty well. Now, the last batch, started to bubble on most of the hot afternoons. They say it "moisture" in the wood. I have left it out for a month before painting and the last time my project entailed stripping it almost t...

In some instances of bubbles coming through on a warmer surface this may just be an indication that the surface was too hot at the time of application...
Covers so well!
Would RecommendI painted my whole cottage 25x25 with less than five gallons. It is wonderful paint and looks so nice when drys, has a sheen.

Works well in our harsh environment
Would RecommendI've been using this acrylic solid stain on my deck for 7 years. Yes, I do touch it up every 2 years but I live close to the canadian border so piles of snow and lots of rain. This stain is flawless where the wood was in good condition - meaning brand new deck boards that I replaced due to rot from bad care of previous owner - but it does peel in areas where the wood is old and breaking down - the areas of my deck that I have not yet replaced. Honestly, every summer I'm amazed at how great my de...

Be prepared to redo EVERY summer
Would Not RecommendI've been using this product for 10 years. Why? Because the previous homeowner used it and I didnt want to take it all off my huge deck with many railings. We live in Chicagoland so snow does sit on the deck for several weeks of the year. Every summer it is peeling off all over the deck and we have to scrape, powerwash and repeat. It's fine on vertical surfaces. It looks just like PAINT, not stain. Water does not bead up on it. There are just huge puddles of water on the deck after a rain.

Doesn't Last Long
Would Not RecommendI purchased the Cabot Solid Color Decking Stain to do our large deck. I followed the prep instructions and applied a single coat of the stain using a brush. It went on nice, filled all the crevices and looked amazing when it was first applied (2012). The next summer it was starting to peal up in large chunks on the horizontal deck boards and stairs (2013). The railing still looks good with no pealing, but the surface you walk on was pretty bad. Fast forward to the following summer and now it is ...

7600 Oil Based Solid Color Decking Stain works ok
Would RecommendI have used this product tinted Cordovan Brown over two summers 2012/2013 and found it to be excellent in coverage and weathering. The drying time does vary depending on the application surface. It dries quickly - overnight - on porous surfaces, but takes 2 days or more if the surface has old solid smooth stain on it or if the wood is hard and smooth, probably due to the fact that it can't soak into the old stained solid or smooth wood surfaces. Although this is 'Deck Stain' , and the instruc...

Solid color decking stain
Would Not RecommendThis stain was easy to apply and did cover the way I expected. However, the drying time was supposed to be 8 hours and 24 hours later it is still not dry even though temp and humidity are ideal. If it is not "dry" or "cured" in another 24 hours I have a real problem. The product says to NOT thin but I suspect that it needed thinning in order to be absorbed completely.
