do i need to dig down 8 -10 inches and use base rock and sand ,like i would for a patio?

We did not do any digging. We actually wanted the pathway a bit raised. We layed out some fill dirt a bit wider that our path. We then put some good top soil over it all and put grass seed down. Worked like a charm. I go over it with the lawn tractor and have not had any problems or cracks. Looks fabulous. We did clear and dig out a 1 and 1/2 in deep pathway in our front yard because we wanted it level with yard. Did not use sand or anything. Worked great looks good and no problems or cracks.

No you don't. We wanted an "old" path look and dug down 1 1/2 inches and packed sand to help with water drainage, then filled the spaces between the stones with dirt and grass seed. This made the yard almost level to the top of the stones. In using the form it is not in the instructions that you need sand and I can agree it is not nessecary if you have good drainage in your area.

We did not dig down that deep. We only dug a few inches and put a layer of sand and it worked just fine.

you only clear 1 inch of dirt, then pour cement into mold. After you've layed all the area you will use, put polymer sand between the cracks and wet.

Not necessarily...it depends on the intended usage. For a typical walk, just make sure your substrate is fairly firm. Others have asked about using this product as a driveway... I would not use to drive on even with the proper compacted underlayment.
