Can You Install a Deadbolt Yourself?

Yes, as long as you have the right tools, you can install a deadbolt lock yourself. You’ll need to measure carefully and follow the instructions for your lock closely, but in most cases, this should be a relatively straightforward installation. This can be a good beginner do-it-yourself project. You can use the skills and techniques you learn to take on other home improvement projects.

How Long Does it Take to Install a Deadbolt?

Typically, for a standard door and lock, installation should take an hour or two. Plan your timing. You’ll have your exterior door open for much of this time, so take the weather, children, pets, etc. into consideration.

Are Deadbolt Holes Standard?

Most deadbolts need a hole 2-1/8-inches in diameter for the body of the lock to fit into the door. The bolt on a typical deadbolt requires a 1-inch hole in the edge of the door. Even though these hole sizes are typical, always check the manufacturer’s specifications and instructions for any lock that you’re considering or installing.

Before You Begin

Determine whether your installation will be in a wood, fiberglass or steel door. Then, buy the correct tools for the door material.

We’ll show you how to install a deadbolt lock below, but installation may vary by lock model. Always follow the instructions that came with your lock.

Good to Know

The door’s thickness should be between 1-3/8 and 1-3/4 inches. Most deadbolts fit doors in this range.
