Gorgeous wood for a desk.
Purchased in store, it was packaged well and completely sealed. The thick plastic sealing and keeping it safe makes it difficult to look for defects, though. There was a small dent on one side, but the other side was perfect, so that became the top. I didn't stain, just used a satin polyurethane.

Disappointed in quality, soft wood, easily damaged
I bought this for a jewelry workbench top. Based on other reviews, I took care to select from the store a piece whose plastic wrap was still intact. However, the packaging does not permit one to inspect the entire surface for defects. When I unwrapped it, I found one side was clearly not intended as the "bottom" (unseen). The top side was better, but still had a lot of light colored (sap, soft) wood, lots of knots, a tear-out gouge, and a long mark where something had dragged across the surf...
