How to Store Wine at Home
The right storage maintains the integrity of wine, helps it age correctly and keeps it tasting delicious.
A wall wine rack in the kitchen is a great option for short-term storage, especially if preservation isn't a concern. The benefits of keeping wine in the kitchen are accessibility and visibility. To reduce exposure to daylight, store wine bottles in boxes or wrap them in cloth, especially wine that comes in an untinted bottle. Vibration stirs up sediment, which can speed up deterioration, so be sure to position this kitchen wine rack so that it's not directly against the refrigerator. If you're not collecting vintage wines, though, don't stress about the storage conditions — store wine for a few months at a time and enjoy!
Read on to learn more about wine racks, how to use them for storage and how to build one of your own.
How Do You Store Wine Bottles at Home?
Cool, dark places like a basement are best because they prevent wine from spoiling. Wine refrigerators are another good option, especially for those without a cool basement. Fine wines should be stored in the dark at 55-60 degrees Fahrenheit, and for storage beyond six months, at 70-80% humidity.
Should Wine Bottles be Stored at an Angle?
Wine bottles should be stored horizontally or at an angle of up to 45 degrees (with the cork facing down) to maintain contact between the cork and the wine, keeping the cork moist and preventing air from getting in.
How Long Can I Store Wine?
The shelf life of wine varies largely depending on the varietal. Lighter white wines average 1-2 years while heavy-bodied reds are fine for 2-3. Vintage and fine wines may last for decades.
How to Build a DIY Wine Rack
Add floor-to-ceiling custom wine storage to the side of a standard-depth fridge for a built-in look. You can build the wine tower from rugged plywood over the course of a week or two.
