When to Use a Built-In Bookcase

Built-in bookcases — unlike furniture and throw rugs — are permanent fixtures in your space. They typically cost more than store-bought bookcases, but many people consider them a good investment because they add interest to a room.

There are plenty of bookcases you can purchase fully assembled, and there are times when using a store-bought bookcase can make better sense than a built-in one. If you’re renting, like to redo your rooms often or lack the space for a built-in bookcase, there are still some great options. Store-bought bookcases — like farmhouse bookcases, metal bookcases and ladder bookcases — come in a variety of colors and finishes.

Plan Your Built-In Bookcase

Once you’ve decided on a built-in bookcase, it’s time to do some planning so you can save time during the project and make it as easy as possible.

Ideas for Decorating Your Built-In Bookshelf

Make your bookshelf part of your décor. Here are some built-in bookshelf ideas to get you started.

  • If your wall coverings, ceiling and flooring are all a similar color, go bold and choose an eye-popping paint to highlight your bookshelf. You can also paint the back wall of the bookcase a contrasting color.
  • Use paint that has a slight gloss for a sparkling appearance.
  • Create a statement piece by painting your bookshelf a dark color. Black is a classic, but don’t overlook blue, green and gray, too.
  • Try vintage wallpaper on the back of your bookcase for a whimsical look.
  • Line the shelves with books that have colorful spines. Wrap books in a pretty fabric or keep things neutral by turning the books around so that the pages show. Use decorative bookends.
  • Keep things interesting by using different materials, such as baskets, vases and trinkets. Decorate with different finishes of wood, metal and glass.
  • Don’t be afraid to have white space. White space in decorating makes people feel relaxed.
  • Showcase your personality and interests. Shelves are a great place for framed photos, artwork, keepsakes and hobby-related items.
