When the temperature warms up, swim season is around the corner. If you have a swimming pool, you need to get the pool — and the water — ready. From covers to chemicals to filter maintenance, follow these pool opening steps to get ready for a season of fun and relaxation.

Opening a Pool

It's best to open a pool when the temperature is still a little cool to prevent algae growth at the start of the season. We'll show you the general steps for getting the water clear and clean, and setting up the pool filter. However, always follow the manufacturer's instructions for your specific pool equipment.

Remove the Pool Cover

Start with the pool cover. Chances are good it needs some attention before you remove it.

Don't walk on the cover or allow children and pets to play near the pool unsupervised.

Reassemble the Filter System

Follow the manufacturer’s directions for reassembling your filter system. There are three types of filters: sand, diatomaceous earth (DE) and cartridge.

As part of opening a pool, there are a few other things you can do to get ready for the season.

  • Make sure nearby planting beds are in good shape. Look for tree branches that might drop leaves into the pool. Good garden maintenance and pruning can save you additional pool cleaning in the future.
  • Take inventory of your pool toys and floats. They may need cleaning or replacement.
