Before You Install a Pedestal Sink

Pedestal sinks come in two pieces: the stand, or pedestal, and the sink itself. Depending on the model, the plumbing either fits inside the pedestal which is secured to the floor, or it’s slightly visible behind the sink. The sink is mounted to the wall and rests on the pedestal stand. Lowe’s pedestal sinks come in a variety of styles and types to make it easy to find what you need.

Before Replacing a Bathroom Vanity or Installing a New Pedestal Sink:

  • Installing a pedestal sink is more involved than installing a regular drop-in or wall-mounted sink. Fitting the plumbing inside the pedestal and precise measurements make this challenging work.
  • Pedestal sink storage is practically nonexistent. Decide if you can live without the storage space of a bathroom vanity cabinet. Replace the lost space with shelving or a medicine cabinet.
  • When removing an old vanity, the floor and wall will probably require some attention. The water supply lines also may need to be relocated. If the plumbing needs to be rerouted, it’s best to call a professional to complete this work.

Are Pedestal Sinks Easy to Install?

It depends on your experience with plumbing. There are two tricky parts—handling any changes to your plumbing and trying to hook it up so it’s not visible and lifting the pieces of the pedestal sink. Since they’re usually made of large pieces of porcelain, it can be heavy, it’s helpful to have an extra set of hands to help position the sink as you install it.

How Do You Attach a Pedestal Sink to the Floor?

A pedestal sink is installed to the floor and the wall. You use hanger bolts to secure the sink to the wall. Then you use a lag bolt and a washer to secure the pedestal to the floor.

How Do You Hide Plumbing Behind a Pedestal Sink?

If it’s a priority to hide the plumbing completely, purchase a pedestal sink with a stand designed to hide the plumbing. If that’s not an option, be intentional in choosing your plumbing parts to ensure they’re as aesthetically pleasing as possible, for example opting for metal pipes over a PVC pipe.
