Preparing for Luxury Vinyl Tile Installation

A kitchen with white marble-look luxury vinyl tile flooring, gray cabinets and brass lighting.

Luxury vinyl tile can be installed in almost any room. Just remember to check the manufacturer's instructions before beginning.

Instructions

Remove the Old Flooring

Damaged vinyl flooring.

Luxury vinyl tile can go over almost any type of subfloor: concrete, wood or existing vinyl. However, the existing vinyl must be in good condition and firmly attached to the subfloor. If the old vinyl has texture or small, damaged areas, you can apply an embossing leveler over top to create a smooth surface.

Do not install LVT over flooring that has been treated with varnish, sealant, paint or anything similar. Never add additional adhesive to self-stick tiles. This can void the warranty and can cause a chemical reaction making the tile not stick.

Flooring that is in poor condition should be removed. Here are steps for removing old vinyl.

Caution

Always wear a respirator when removing old flooring. Be aware that vinyl manufactured before 1986 may contain asbestos. It's recommended that you test older flooring materials before removal, and have a professional remove them.

Instructions

Prepare the Subfloor for LVT

Before installing new vinyl flooring, you’ll need to prep the underlayment depending on the type. For more help, see Prepping a Concrete Subfloor for Hardwood or Laminate Flooring or Prepping a Plywood Subfloor for Hardwood or Laminate Flooring.

Instructions

Mark the Starting Line

Snapping a chalkline on the LVT subflooring.

Marking a starting line is the best way to keep the tile joints straight during the installation. There are several ways to determine a starting line. Follow the instructions for your tile. Here is the typical method for marking a starting line.

Install the New Luxury Vinyl Tile

Luxury vinyl tile is mostly available as a peel-and-stick option. The paper backing peels off and the tile sticks to the floor. The paper backing has arrows that should always be pointing in the same direction as you install the tile. This helps keep the pattern consistent.

Groutable Luxury Vinyl Tile

Spacers for luxury vinyl tile.

Some luxury vinyl tile can be installed with grout for a more traditional tile appearance. During installation, use tile spacers between the tiles and apply an acrylic grout specifically designed for use with vinyl tile. See the tile and grout manufacturers’ instructions for more information.

Finish the Floor

Follow these steps to finish the floor.
