Installing door trim moulding and window trim moulding can improve the appearance of your home. This also helps to bridge the gap between the door jamb and the wall. This moulding is usually called casing. We will walk you through installing window and door casing for a clean and finished look.

Tools and Materials

Safety Measures

  • Ensure that you're wearing safety glasses and a dust mask. This is to protect your eyes and avoid inhaling any fumes. Wear ear protection to prevent any accidental hazards.
  • Ensure there is adequate ventilation while working. This is to avoid the buildup of any harmful fumes from the adhesive.
  • Keep your power tools away from flammable materials. This includes paint or solvents since they can lead to accidents.

Start with Preparation

If you’re installing fresh trim, some of these steps may not apply. But if you’re upgrading existing trims, you will need to start with preparing the surface.

How to Install Moulding Around a Door and Window

If you need information on how to install door mouldings and how to install window mouldings, you’re in the right place.

Add Finishing Touches

Now that you know how to install casing on a door and window, add the finishing touches for a finished look.

Fill Gaps with Caulk

If you see any gaps between the moulding and the wall or door frame, you can fill them with caulk. A caulk gun can make your job easy. Apply a layer of caulk in the corner joints. Use a putty knife to make it even and smooth. Let it dry completely based on the manufacturer’s instructions.

Caution

Work in a ventilated area to avoid inhaling caulk fumes.

Fill the Nail Holes

If you spot any nail holes from your old casing, fill them up with wood filler. Using a putty knife, apply a thin and even layer in the nail holes. Let it dry completely before you use a fine-grit sandpaper to sand it smoothly.

Caution

Wear a dust mask when you’re sanding the wood filler. This is to avoid inhaling any dust.

Apply Paint

Match your door or window frame by painting the moulding in a similar color for a cohesive look. Use a high-quality paint or stain that is ideal for wood. You’ll need paint brushes for minute detailing.

Caution

Follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions when working with paint. Also, work in a ventilated area to avoid inhaling the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in paint. VOCs evaporate easily into the air and high VOC levels can cause irritation and trigger allergies.

Additional Tips

  • Make sure that the moulding is installed in a straight line. Use a level to avoid a crooked appearance.
  • You can drill the nail holes prior to driving in the nails. This can prevent the wood from splitting when you’re hammering in the nails.
  • Using a nail gun can help you get the job done quicker and easier.
  • Installing moulding can take time. Make sure to check the measurements thoroughly for a secure fit.
  • Having someone to hold the moulding in place while you secure it can make the process easier.
