How To Fix a Loose or Broken Toilet Paper Holder

Fixing a loose or broken toilet paper holder is an easy DIY fix if done with the right tools and methods. We’ll walk you through every step of the process.

Look for visible screws on the toilet paper holder. These are the set screws that need to be removed.
Use an Allen wrench to loosen the visible set screws on the toilet paper holder.
Do the same for both sides. After the screws are removed, the holder should come right off.

Removing the Escutcheon

Some toilet paper holders don't have visible screws. Instead, they have a round steel plate at the end of your toilet paper holder, attached to your wall. That’s called the escutcheon, which is particularly placed to cover the hardware underneath. To access the screws behind it, remove the escutcheon first.

Use a utility knife to cut through the caulk around the escutcheon, loosening it.
Insert a flathead screwdriver between the escutcheon and the wall, then gently pry around the perimeter to lever it forward.

Wall anchors account for a secure fit. If not the loose screws, it is these wall anchors that may be faulty. Replacing these wall anchors with new ones is the only way to go.

Whatever the existing type of wall anchor, it is recommended to use toggle bolt anchors.

These anchors have flaps or wings with a spring mechanism that opens up into the wall once inserted. This allows for a snug and secure fit.

Take the toggle bolt and remove the spring side.
Insert the bolt through the bracket and reattach the spring back on.
Repeat this for both the toggle bolts.
Compress both the screws and push them right through the holes in the wall.

Pull the bracket and give it a bit of pressure, so that the springs behind are secure and tighten up against the wall on the other end.
Work top to bottom and tighten the screws as they get closer to the drywall.
After the screws are tightened and in place, reattach the fixture and ensure a tight fit.
Tighten the screws that are meant to hold the toilet paper holder.
Insert the middle piece after you have made sure that both sides are secure.

When to Replace Your Toilet Paper Holder

Any repairs to your toilet paper holders can be easily made by tightening a few screws. Address issues firsthand to prevent larger damages which may need you to replace your holders. Every once in a while, check the screws to make sure that they are tight and snug. Wipe your holders with a damp cloth to avoid any dust or grime build-up. If your holders are cracked or broken, don’t hesitate to consider a replacement.
