How to Build a Key Holder
We have mentioned two types of keyholders and how to build them. Here is the process on how to craft your own DIY key holder for a wall.
Hanging Key Holder
Prepare the Wooden Base
- Cut the wood with a hand saw according to the size mentioned below.
- Small: 6 X 3 inches
-
Medium: 8 X 4 inches
-
Large: 10 X 5 inches
- Once the wooden base is ready, sand it down with medium grit sandpaper to remove any rough patches and then smooth the surface with a fine grit sandpaper.
- If you want a natural look, apply clear varnish to the wood.
Wear safety glasses while cutting and make sure that the blade is sharp and securely fastened.
Mark Your Key Placement
- Once the base is dry, it’s time to decide where you want the keys to hang.
- Use a measuring tape and carpenter pencil to mark the spots where the screw hooks will go.
- Ideally, space the hooks about ⅔ inches apart. This can be adjusted based on the size of your keys.
Attach the Hooks
- Pre-drill holes at the marked spots to make screwing in the hooks easier and to prevent the wood from splitting.
-
Screw the hooks into the holes made in the wood with the help of a screwdriver.
- Make sure that the hooks are secured and evenly placed.
Wear safety glasses and hearing protection while using a drilling machine.
Add the Finishing Touch
- After the hooks are attached, apply a coat of varnish to protect the wood and give it a finished look.
- If you've painted your key holder, a finishing coat can help to seal the paint and prevent it from chipping or peeling.
-
Allow the finishing coat to dry completely before you use it as a key holder.
Mount your Key Holder to the Wall
- Once you have built your key holder, it’s time to mount it on the wall.
- Mark the wall where you want to place the key holder.
- Drill a pilot hole into the wall stud, then insert a wall plug.
-
Screw the key holder directly into the wall plug.
Protect your eyes with safety glasses from any potential debris or falling objects while drilling or hammering.
And there you have it with these five steps, you can master how to build a key holder that's designed to your personal style and home decor.
