What's a Window Cornice?

A cornice is an ornamental window treatment that covers the top of a window, making them a sleek and structured addition to any room. They can be built as a box that fits around or over the window frame. They can also be built to blend seamlessly with the crown moulding (as shown).

Here are a few aesthetic benefits to installing window cornices:

  • If you're using curtains, it conceals the curtain rod.
  • If you're not using curtains, it provides architectural interest to a room.
  • By placing a window cornice above the window frame, it creates the illusion of height and spaciousness in the room.

A window cornice can also be modified to suit the room's style. For a sleek, modern silhouette, select a simple window cornice. If you prefer something more ornamental, use moulding and appliques for a more traditional look.

Mounting a cornice is relatively easy. Center the cornice over the window and hang it using wall anchors, a drill and wood screws. Then you can hang the curtain rod from the supports inside the cornice.

Cornice vs. Valance

Valance
A cornice is often confused with a valance. Both adorn the top of a window and, if needed, conceal hardware. However, there's one major difference between the two. A valence (right) is made from free-flowing fabric. It can be used alone or paired with curtains or shades.

Cornice
A cornice is more structured and is typically made of a solid material like wood that’s stained, painted or covered with fabric to match or complement the curtains or color scheme of the room. Foam board is a lightweight material option. When used on a window that’s proportionally too small for the room, a cornice creates visual balance.
