How to Clean a Sink

Kitchen sink drains and garbage disposals need to be cleaned regularly to prevent build-up and odors. Cleaning kitchen sink drains and disposals is easy. First, pour a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a cup of vinegar. Let it sit for 30 minutes and then run hot water to flush it out.

Use a cleaner that's specially formulated to clean faucets or use a mixture of dish soap and water. Spray it on the faucet and around the base and nozzle. Wipe it down with a cleaning cloth. Use a toothbrush to clean hard-to-reach areas. Rinse any soap residue off and dry it with a different cloth to prevent water spots.

Remove the aerator from the faucet and disassemble the parts. Mix a solution of equal parts vinegar and water. Let the parts soak for at least an hour. If they're extra dirty, let it sit for up to 24 hours.

Next, use a toothbrush to scrub the aerator. Rinse it and reassemble the parts. Add it back to the faucet.

If you have a workstation kitchen sink, you'll need to clean the bottom rack and cutting board. For the rack, use a soft cleanser and a scrub brush to clean the front and back. Rinse with cold water and let it dry.

Wood cutting boards can be cleaned with mild dish soap and water. Rinse it off. Next, sanitize the board by spraying it with a mixture of vinegar and water. Rinse it again and let it dry standing upright. Once it's completely dry, apply a thin layer of mineral oil with a cleaning cloth.

To remove food particles and debris, turn the strainer upside down and rinse it with water. Next, soak the strainer in warm soapy water for a few minutes. Scrub the strainer with a sponge or toothbrush. Rinse it clean and let it dry.

Check the seams to ensure the caulk is intact. If it appears worn or peeling, use a tool to remove the old caulk. Then replace it with a waterproof silicone sealant.
