Why Use a Caulking Gun?
Caulk fills gaps and cracks, keeping air, water and bugs out of your home. A caulking gun is a tool that’s used to apply caulk to seal the gaps and cracks. Caulk is typically used around windows, doors, pipes, plumbing, bathtubs and wherever there’s a break in siding. Before working on a caulking project, it's important to learn how to use a caulk gun effectively.
Whether you're caulking windows, caulking baseboards or caulking showers, the same general rules apply. Read on to find out how to caulk a bathtub as well as other areas of your home. Prepare to Caulk
When preparing to caulk, you'll first need to make sure that any existing caulk is removed.
As a general rule, caulking over old caulk isn’t recommended. However, it’s possible to add new caulk over old caulk if the old caulk isn’t free from mold and damage.
How to Remove Caulk
Preparing the Caulk Gun
Once you've removed any old caulk, cleaned the surface and repaired and applied touch-up paint to any damaged surfaces, it's time to apply caulk.

Clean Up
It's important to immediately clean up any spilled caulk. Keep rags handy for wiping up any mistakes.
You can clean up many uncured latex-based caulks with water. For silicone caulk, clean up with mineral spirits or rubbing alcohol. Dried caulk will need to be cut or scraped away. Check the manufacturer's cleanup instructions for details.
Capping Off Partially Used Caulk Cartridges
Caulk plugs are the best way to ensure your caulk doesn't dry out between uses. If you don't have a plug, place a nail at least 2 inches into the nozzle of the caulk tube. Then wrap the nozzle tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Check the manufacturer’s recommendations for storage.
Before a caulking project, make sure any partially used caulk is still good. Locate and check the Use By date. If you can't find a date, apply a line of caulk down a piece of cardboard and wait 15 minutes. If the caulk doesn't form a skin, it needs to be discarded.
Reopening a Used Tube
If you’re reusing a tube of caulk, cut the nozzle near the base with a utility knife. Then drive a screw into the nozzle through the hardened caulk but leave enough room to grab the end. Use the screw to pull the hardened caulk out of the nozzle and unclog it.
