Prepare for Your Mailbox Column Project
- Use a semirigid backing material, such as non-expandable spray foam, as a form for the concrete grouting.
- Cut units as needed to accommodate various mailbox sizes.
- The long side of the large unit will always face the outside of the pillar. The inner column produces a 10-inch by 10-inch center core.
- Mark the column location and excavate a 12-inch deep by 42-inch square.
- Compact the soil.
- Add 6 inches of granular base material.
- Compact and level the base to avoid settling.
Before beginning any excavation, check for underground utilities. Call the North America One Call Referral Service at 1-888-258-0808 (or just dial 811) for a national directory of utility companies.
Install the Column
Wall block sizes vary by style and market. Use the quantities of block and retaining wall pins in the material list as guides. Also, when purchasing wall block, remember that some block has an interlocking lip on the bottom for use in retaining walls, not stacked block projects.
