Buying an E-Bike or Mini Bike: What You Need to Know

Different types of e-bikes and mini bikes work for all kinds of recreational riding — you can find the right bike for on road or off. Motorized bikes even make commutes and errands fun. If you’re buying an e-bike or mini bike, our mini bike and e-bike buying guide helps you make the right choice.

What Is a Mini Bike?

Mini bikes are small, recreational vehicles similar in design to motorcycles. An electric motor or gasoline engine powers a mini bike. Mini bikes are designed for off-road riding, often featuring wide, knobby tires. Depending on the power output of the motor or engine, you can find mini bikes capable of speeds ranging from about 15 to 28 miles per hour on flat ground. You may also see electric and gas dirt bikes. These are smaller-scale versions of full-size dirt bikes, but they tend to be more powerful than mini bikes, with some capable of speeds up to 50 miles per hour or more.

What Is an E -Bike?

Electric bikes or e-bikes are motor-assisted bicycles. Unlike a mini bike, which uses a motor or engine as the only means of power, an e-bike uses the motor to assist you as you pedal. A motor controller lets you determine the level of assistance the motor provide and a display screen gives you information on factors like speed and battery level. An e-bike motor may have limits on how much power (wattage) it can provide and may have a maximum speed of operation. For example, if you’re headed downhill at 28 miles per hour, the motor may stop functioning so it doesn’t add to your speed.

Benefits of Mini Bikes and E-Bikes

While you might use the terms e-bike and mini bike interchangeably, each type of vehicle has specific advantages.

Mini Bike Benefits

  • Mini bikes are almost exclusively intended for recreational riding.
  • Though mini bikes don’t have the capabilities of full-size motorcycles, they’re generally more economical and easier to ride.
  • With proper supervision and safety gear, a mini bike may be a good way for a beginning rider to learn skills that could transfer to a full-size motor bike.
  • A mini bike is a fun, fast ways to enjoy trails, tracks and other off-road terrain.
  • If you have a larger property, a mini bike might be an enjoyable, efficient way of getting from one area to another.

E-Bike Benefits

  • You can find types of e-bikes suitable for paved roads and models that can take on trails and other unpaved terrain.
  • In addition to being perfect for recreational riding and just having fun on trails or roads, an e-bike is useful for errands.
  • An e-bike provides a power-assisted ride that gives you exercise.
  • If you live in a city, an e-bike can be a primary method of transportation.

Gas-Powered vs. Battery-Powered Bikes

Mini bikes and dirt bikes are available with gasoline engines or battery-powered electric motors. E-bikes, of course, are exclusively battery powered.

  • A gasoline-powered mini bike or dirt bike has an advantage of power and much greater range than a battery-powered model, but you will have to purchase fuel regularly.
  • A battery-powered bike offers good power and range, depending on the battery. In addition, a battery-powered motor is quieter than a gasoline engine, creates less vibration and generates no emissions during use. However, the battery charge limits your ride time.

Electric mini bikes and e-bikes use lead-acid batteries or lithium ion batteries. Lead acid batteries might make a bike more economical, but a lithium ion battery will be lighter, smaller and deliver full power longer. Lithium ion batteries also charge faster and are less affected by temperature extremes.

Additional E-Bike or Mini Bike Features

When purchasing an E-bike or mini bike, consider features and specifications that make the bike safer, more fun and more useful. • A foldable frame makes storage and packing an e-bike easier.

  • A step-through e-bike has a frame with a low top tube or no top tube at all, making getting on and off the e-bike easier.
  • Suspension makes off-road riding more comfortable.
  • Weight capacity indicates the total weight of rider and cargo the bike can safely handle.
  • E-bikes with multiple gears or speeds (ex. a 7-speed transmission) give a wider range of peddling options — high gears for speed on level ground and low gears for peddling up hills. On a mini bike, more gears lets the motor operate more efficiently.
  • The amp-hour and voltage ratings of an e-bike battery give you an indication of range and speed an e-bike is capable of. Wattage is an indication of how quickly the bike can accelerate and how efficiently it carries weight. Higher ratings generally indicate more capabilities.
  • Maximum speed and maximum range ratings give you an idea of the capabilities of the bike, but actual values depend on the terrain and battery charge.
  • Parental speed controls improve safety for children.
  • Brushless motors use battery power more efficiently and tend to last longer than brushed motors.

Buying a Mini Bike or E-Bike

When shopping, one of the first choices you need to make is between a power-assisted e-bike and fully powered mini bike or dirt bike. Consider how you’ll use the bike. An e-bike is more versatile but for pure fun, a mini bike or dirt bike might be a better fit.

Other things to think about include:

  • Speed: The rider must be able to safely manage the speed of the bike.
  • Terrain Capabilities: E-bikes are usually suitable for paved surfaces, but you can find models that handle some off-road terrain. Mini-bikes and dirt bikes excel at off-road riding.
  • Price: Decide if you’re investing in a bike for weekend fun and vacations or as an efficient means of transportation.
  • Age Range: Be sure to match the intended age of the bike to the age of the rider.
  • Features: The features on a bike impact the price, so find the features that fit your budget and make your bike more useful or fun.

Using a Mini Bike or E-Bike

While mini bikes and e-bikes can be useful and lots of fun, these are motorized vehicles and many are capable of speeds up to 20 miles per hour or more. You need to use them legally and safely.

Using a Mini Bike or E-Bike Legally

Different states, counties, cities, etc. have different laws about mini bike, dirt bike, and e-bike use. Before you invest, check the laws and restrictions for your area to make sure you can use the bike as you plan too and that you have everything you need to operate it legally. There are several factors to consider, including:

  • Legality for use on roads or public land
  • Registration, title and license requirements
  • Insurance requirements
  • Helmet laws
  • Minimum age for the operator
  • Required equipment (ex., spark arrestor, headlights and tail lights)

Mini Bike and E-Bike Safety

Once you know how to legally use a mini bike, dirt bike or e-bike, consider the safety requirements. The bike owner’s manual will provide specifics around safe operation and safety gear, but you’ll need:

  • A Helmet: A standard bicycle helmet works for many e-bike uses, but for off-road riding, consider an off-road helmet or UTV helmet
  • Eye Protection: For trail riding and any off-road excursions, protect your eyes from dirt, dust and other debris. For some trail riding, you may want a pair of goggles that fit your helmet or a pair of safety glasses
  • Elbow and Knee Pads: If you’re purchasing a bike for a beginning rider, you might want to consider this added protection in case of falls.
  • Gloves: Gloves give you a better grip on the handlebars and can protect your hands from injury.
  • Closed-Toe Shoes: The right footwear can protect you from a pedaling mishap on an e-bike or debris on a trail ride.

Also read the manual for instructions on safe riding, suitable terrain, etc.

Mini Bike and E-Bike Accessories

While a mini bike or e-bike — along with the necessary safety gear — is fun and useful by itself, there are a few add-ons that let you make the most of your investment.

  • Depending on the manufacturer, you may be able to purchase tools or other equipment that use the same batteries as your mini bike.
  • Keep your e-bike safe and keep it out of the way with a bike storage system.
  • If your vehicle has a trailer hitch receiver, a cargo basket or tray can make it easy to transport your mini bike or dirt bike.
  • Use bungee cords to keep an e-bike secure on a bike rack or a set of tie downs to secure a bike on a cargo carrier or in a truck bed.
  • Protect your investment with a cable lock
  • For gas models, it might be helpful to have a small gas can you use exclusively for your bike.
  • Purchase a small tool kit and a suitable lubricant to keep near your bike for maintenance and adjustments.
  • A pair of sunglasses make daytime commutes and errands on a e-bike more enjoyable.
