If you answered mostly A’s, you might prefer a front-loading washing machine.
If you answered mostly B’s, you might prefer a top-loading washing machine.
A. Front-Load Washing Machine
If you’re short on space a front-load washing machine is a no-brainer. They’re usually narrower than top-loading washing machines and can be stacked with a dryer. If you decide to go with a stackable washer and dryer, be sure to purchase the appropriate stacking kit. You can always unstack your washer and dryer if you move into a home with a larger laundry room. Some front-load washers can’t be stacked, so read the product description carefully.
Front-load washing machines use less water than a top-loader making them more energy efficient. The interior tub of a front-loader doesn’t need to fill up as much to keep everything saturated as the soapy water spins around the clothes. You won’t be able to add clothes mid-cycle since opening the door will spill water on the floor.
They’re also better for people in a wheelchair or those unable to reach over a top-loading washing machine.
Pros of a Front-Load Washing Machine
- Good for compact spaces since they’re usually narrower than a top-load washing machine.
- Front-loading washing machines can be stacked.
- They’re more energy efficient since they use less water.
- The doors are lower to the ground making them better for people in wheelchairs.
Avoid mold and mildew on your front-load washer by keeping the rubber seal clean and allowing the drum to dry out completely after each wash cycle.
B. Top-Load Washing Machine
If you have a dedicated laundry room with ample space, you may enjoy a top-load washing machine. Use the flat space on top of your washer to hold your laundry basket, fold clothes or as extra storage.
A top-load washing machine is great for families with a ton of laundry since they usually hold more than front-loaders. Top-load washing machines are ideal if you have laundry with tough stains, like kid’s jeans with grass-stained knees or dirty sneakers, since they come with an impeller, agitator or sometimes both.
Agitator – A washer with an agitator has a tall spindle that rubs against the clothes to loosen tough stains.
Impeller – An impeller is a raised disk in the bottom of the washer that helps move the clothes and loosen dirt.
If you need to soak laundry or want to add in a stray sock after the cycle starts a top-load washing machine is the only way to go. A top-load washing machine is easier to use if you have back problems or a disability that limits your range of movement since there’s less bending to load the washer.
Pros of a Top-Loading Washing Machine
- The added agitator and/or an impeller makes washing heavily soiled items easier.
- You can pre-soak laundry.
- You can add items in mid-cycle.
- Less bending, making them great for people with back problems or mobility issues.
Washing Machine Size and Load Capacity
What size washing machine you choose depends on the size of your laundry area and how much laundry you plan on doing in each load.
- Small (less than 3.5 cu. ft) – Perfect for small spaces, these washing machines can hold up to 4 -8 lbs. of laundry. Think two pairs of jeans and two large bath towels.
- Medium or standard (3.5 – 4.5 cu. ft) – Great for two adults, these machines can hold up to 12 – 16 lbs. of laundry. Think four pairs of jeans, four towels and two t-shirts.
- Large (4.6 cu. ft +) 16 – 20lbs – Ideal for families with tons of laundry, this sized washing machine will accommodate large loads. This means you can wash your king-sized comforter with ease.
