Make sure the cuts are straight and no burrs.

Sharkbite for the win
Would RecommendSharkbite fittings may be a little pricey but they are convenient and leak free. I used this 3/4 MNPT fitting to install a circulation pump on my water heater. It was easy to secure to the pump and even easier to secure to the pipe. About 1-1/8" of pipe length went into the fitting. No leaks.
