The locking shaft does not slide into the lock, it simply rests within a 3/4 type closing, so once locked, it can not be pulled up or rotated in any direction until your combo has been entered. Locking this way prevents the shaft from getting stuck within the lock, eliminating a key and the need to use a lubricant to get it unlocked.
