Worked well out of the box

The sole of the plane was dead flat. There were no sharp edges on the body that I noticed. I disassembled it and wiped the shipping oil off all the parts. All the parts were in good shape and iron was also dead flat.I put it back together and got the iron parallel to the throat. There's a little wiggle room for the iron and cap, so it took me a minute to adjust it. I did not sharpen the blade. I tested it on a 1 x 2 piece of poplar. I slowly advanced the blade until I was getting shavings...

Don't forget to fine tune!

When tuning (with sandpaper, lapping, etc.), the sole AND the iron were enough out of flat that I couldn't get them to be totally flat. The tool still functions, but it may take an actual grinder to get perfect flatness. Even so, the plane works well right out of the box, but definitely sharpen the iron for better performance.

Took me a little while to get things adjusted but after adjusting this little plane works surprisingly well not perfect but good for out of the box, it will need honing to get the best out of it, was also quite well made and machining was nice and the price was fair, maybe I got lucky with my purchase. I might have to get the ten inch and see if I can get lucky again.. THANKS.. P.S just my opinion, for what it's worth..

Excellent Tool

Excellent tool, works really well. Easily set up and is built of solid materials.

They listened

I just bought one. I removed the blade and put it on a honing stone the bed was flat and smooth. The blade sat even and with a quick hone was razor sharp. I never use a new plain or knife without honing it first. I have always bought Stanley plains. This plain put them to shame quality and craftsmanship is better than any other plain

Just fine right from the package

I haven’t even taken it apart to sharpen the iron. Out of the package it was slicing off shavings thin enough to see through. My one gripe is that the locking screw for the adjustable mouth plate is too long, or the hole isn’t drilled deep enough. I had to add a washer to get it to lock the mouth plate in place. Other than that, it’s a nice tool for a great price.

After 20 mins. of wiping off oil and setting the blade, I was getting paper thin shavings. It's performance really surprised me. It works better than some of my more expensive planes. It's a keeper. joe
