Don't know where these would do any good.

Went to Hillman's website to find the drill size. Tried to screw the insert in. The slotted piece broke off. The wood was soft pine. Tried a second one and it broke off, too.

It was what I needed to replace a missing one. I actually needed one for a metric bold and was able to retap this for the metric size.

Size matters

I bought the "Hillman 5/16-in x 18 Brass Wood Insert Nut" to use with a 5/16-in x 18 threaded knob. The combination worked great. For the insert nut, I drilled a 25/64" hole, which successfully accepted the insert nut. I started out with a 3/8" (24/64") hole, but found that hole to be too difficult to thread the insert nut into. There were no instructions in the bag with the product. That’s OK if you know what to do with it. If you are using this for the first time to repair something broken, instructions would be nice. Also, the quality was not the best.

0/6 worked and I have a pile of broken brass inserts. following the recommended pilot hole dimensions and hardware to put in place the three that did go in before shattering broke trying to remove the bolt used to thread them in.

Breaks every time

I've restored furniture for over 20 years and this style insert breaks during installation almost every time. You have 2 choices, a hole big enough for it screw in easily, but not much bite and eventually fails. Or a hole too tight breaking the insert, but has the proper bite. I usually only use Allen wrench style, but Lowe's doesn't sell them at this size.

Work fine when installed correctly

Being brass, these inserts are quite soft so care needs to be taken when screwing these into hardwood. I made the mistake of using a screwdriver on the slot at the top of the insert, which caused the top to shear off as soon as a little torque was applied. I should have known better! The correct way to install these is to screw two ordinary nuts onto a screw of the corresponding size, lock the two nuts against each other, and then screw that assembly into the brass insert nut and ultimately into...

No-break Install

Excellent product. I only wish it was shorter for my specific application (18mm plywood). To install without risk of breaking, start by drilling a 15/32" pilot hole. Get a 3/8-16 hex head bolt at least 1" long. Thread a 3/8-16 hex nut onto the bolt, leaving about 1/2" of the bolt thread exposed.
