What Customers Are Saying
The Minwax Polyshades product has received mixed reviews. Many customers found it easy to apply and liked the convenience of the combined stain and polyurethane. They reported good color results and a durable finish. However, some customers struggled to get an even, consistent application and were disappointed with the final appearance, finding it too glossy or not dark enough. A few customers had major issues with the product, describing it as "gummy", "streaky", and "uneven", leading them to have to redo their projects. The reviews suggest this product can work well for simple home projects, but may not be suitable for more complex or high-quality finishing needs.

Would Not RecommendI did not like how heavy and thick this product was for how fast it dried. this shade made my furniture look black due to its thickness and it was very difficult to lay even without drips before drying. I bought the satin finish which I found was rather glossy. Would not ever buy again for furniture. Maybe for floors.

No Color
Would Not RecommendAfter shaking and stirring the stain, I applied it to a pine window trim board, and there was no color. I may as well put clear polyurethane on the board.

Terrible product
Would Not RecommendDoesn't go on even and roughens wood grain so it needs to be sanded before applying second coat. However, can't sand because it gums up the sand paper. Ruined my door.

Refinisher beware
I found this produce very hard to work with, perhaps because of the combination of stain and poly -- streaky colors and gummy application. Using steel wool between coats, (as directed) is a mistake, even after 7 hours of drying time as it sticks to some parts of the finish that were apparently not fully cured. I wish I'd stayed with the traditional two step strain and finish process.

Hands down the worst finish on the market.
Would Not RecommendHands down the worst finish I have ever used. Extremely hard to apply, gums up really fast and looks horrible. It is a "one step" finish, but it is extremely difficult to apply.

Would RecommendInitially used this product over ten years ago to stain a bannister we refinished. We are preparing to downsize now that the children are on their own and in going over touchups throughout the house noticed the bannister had some minor areas that required touchup. We were surprised the exact same formula was available and we were able to address the worn spots perfectly.
