Ratings & Reviews for First Alert BRK Hardwired (with Battery Back-Up) Dual Sensor Smoke detector
Ratings may include incentivized customer reviews.
What Customers Are Saying
The smoke detector features dual ionization and photoelectric sensors for comprehensive smoke detection. Many customers found the product easy to install and appreciated the simple battery replacement. However, a significant number reported issues with defective alarms, false alarms, and battery life concerns. While the product's performance was satisfactory for some, the high rate of reported reliability problems suggests it may not be the most dependable option.

Would Not RecommendI had to order because the store doesn't carry it on the store shelves. When I picked up at the store there were 2 duracell AA batteries loose in the shipping bag and the box inside was unsealed and had some tears. I thought.....this might be a return! When I looked at it closely at home I couldn't say if it was or not so I installed it and tested it with the button. That worked fine so I tested with smoke from a candle and even after repeated snuffings and smoke pouring around the unit it n...
Good detectors but this model is discontinued
Would RecommendThis model detector has been discontinued so you may get one manufacturer in 2022. Two of the ones I bought were manufactured in Aug 2022 and the other 2 I bought were more recent in March 2024. I decided to keep the older ones anyway.

First Lowes would not mail this to my home when I ordered this detector. Store is 20 miles away. When picked up the box looked like a Mack truck had ran over it. The detector was manufactured in Aug. of 2022 [ two years and 3 months ago] . Have to drive to the store again to return it. I am very disappointed in Lowes
Replaced the old ionization detectors with these
Would RecommendWent down the smoke detector rabbit hole on YouTube and decided to update all the 12 year old ionization only detectors in my house. This dual sensor model has since been discontinued because of new smoke detector standards that rolled out this past summer, but these will be fine.

Order Pick-up Issues
Would Not RecommendWaited for some time 5-10min for someone to come to the pick-up desk for me to pick up my order. A mgr finally got someone to take care of me. Then they had to go back to Receiving to retrieve my order for a very small item (another 5 min). They have shelves & bins at "pick-up" for that purpose I thought. Not very good customer service.

Product is a great update for older detectors.
Would RecommendWhen compared to the older BRK detectors these are replacing, the batteries are much easier to change, LED is easier to see, the dual sensor is better and the wire connectors from the older detectors fit perfectly. It does have a smaller footprint than older models, so you may not be able to use the old mounting ring and some paint touch-up may be needed.

A very effective smoke alarm.
Would RecommendThis model of smoke alarm works very well. It is hardwired to 120V and is interconnected to all of our other smoke alarms. I purchased this one to replace one that had reached end-of-life (10 years). It works great.

Working so far
Would RecommendNeeded to replace out of date smoke detectors in my house. Wanted dual-sensor units after researching. Needed 5, cheaper to get 6-pack than ordering 5 separately. So far (2 weeks) no false alarms. Easy installation, especially if replacing First Alert units. Plug was the same for me. As other reviews have noted, the older mounting bracket *sort of* works with new units, but not secure, so I opted to replace. New bracket slightly smaller, but not an issue for my ceiling paint scheme.

Beware of these; look elsewhere
Would Not RecommendI would recommend against getting these detectors. I bought them because they detect using both ionization and photoelectric sensors. Unfortunately, after buying these for 4 bedrooms approximately 6 months ago, I am going to replace them all. We have been plagued by false alarms, including some in the middle of the night. They are hardwired and interconnected, but not all of them sound the alarm when it goes off. Isn’t that the point of interconnection? One will sound and blink red, one will bl...

Great for hardwired installations
Would RecommendI changed over all smoke detectors in my home to this type because it has dual detection.

No manual reset
Would Not RecommendThese have no manual reset. False alarm in the middle of the night. No fire. Device did not automatically reset. Silence button only temporarily stopped alarm. Booklet recommends opening up a window or moving alarm. What? How does one just move a hardwired alarm? What a pain to have to climb up to the ceiling to disconnect the alarm to reset it. Who thought that was a good idea? Don't get hardwired, just get the battery version.

Box opens during shipping.
Would Recommend1. I purchased two of these, in two separate orders. In each box, the packaging popped open and the contents ended up dumped into the larger box. 2. When the detector is hard wired to all the detectors, all the detectors go off at the same time. If there is no fire but the detectors go off, like happened in my home a few days ago, it is hard to tell which alarm is the cause. I pushed the silence button on every detector in my home. On one detector, the LED flashed red. I unplugged it fr...
