We laid strips down on the underside of the carpet first, but I believe the instructions say to put it on the floor first, but we didn't want to mess with measuring. The tape backing was quite difficult to get started when peeling off, but once it was started, it came off easily. So far, with two large Golden's in the house, our 4x8' rug has held tight. One end has come loose a bit, but the rug has stayed centere...

Would Not RecommendNot a firm-grip type of sticky. Didn't keep the hallway rug in place for more than two days. Overall a waste of money. Just trying to get the rug to stick in place on LVP, but no such luck. We used multiple 4-inch pieces around the rug - not just the four corners.
