I think deck cleaner is a must.

Would RecommendValspar is great. I had my deck professionally stained about a year ago, but a lot of it flaked off. I guess the contractor didn't prep the wood properly. (He used Behr.) I didn't have the color code so I peeled off a sample and took it to Lowes. They scanned the sample with some kind of light which created a code and tinted the Valspar. The match was perfect. I mean dead-on. Went on smooth and covered beautifully, dried in about 8 hours on a warm day - 72ºf.
