Can the L shaped bracket be mounted so that it hugs the side of the box (as opposed to sticking up above the box?

The options for mounting are either new work, where the box is mounted under the bracket, and access to the attic would be necessary. Or old work, where the box would be under, and along side the bracket. The old work method can be done either during construction, or during a remodel project.
