These boxes are used in residential electrical applications, or in commercial applications, where no studs to fasten other electrical boxes exist. They are legal to use in both of those two applications all over the USA. They *cannot* be used in open-air applications (in other words, open-wall or no sheetrock or wood or concrete/brick/stone walls) or in industrial applications.
