Hello Nicki. This sounds like a classic case of a low battery. Many name brand batteries have expiration dates printed on them. Please replace the battery with a brand new 9V alkaline battery with an extended expiration date a few years out. Stud finders require adequate voltage to power the sensing mechanism inside the tool. If you try this and are still having issues, please contact us. We offer toll free support by phone at (800) 245 9265 during normal business hours Mon. thru Fri. 8:00am to 5:00pm PST, as well as email. We also maintain a 24/7 interactive online knowledge base on our web site. Thanks
