Does recirculating hot water system use more gas since the piping will cool over time?

My experience is in a system where the water pipes are insulated and there is hardly any increase in fuel usage.

However, there will be a big savings in the quantity and cost of wasted water that formerly went down the drain, not to mention your wasted time waiting for it to get hot. If you have access to your hot water lines, i.e. in a crawlspace, it is a good idea to purchase and install insulation on these hot water lines.

Sometimes I never even got the hot water to the sink, so all that hot water was wasted and just made the rank run for nothing. Also, think of the water you save that just goes down the sink, and water where I live should have gold flakes in it for what it costs. Hope this helps.
Was this Answer Helpful ?Yes, a little energy is lost through the warm pipes. MAKE SURE YOUR HOT WATER PIPES ARE INSULATED! That being done, it is little energy, and less than the amount that goes down the drain waiting to heat up when the pipes are bare. Remember, the lost water is heated water, but got cold sitting in the pipes. Set the timer to run the pump only when needed and you're set.
