Does Watts Hot Water Recirculating Pump need a return line to be installed ?

No. It uses the existing plumbing and they work great. Very easy to install. Just put the smart valve under the furthest sink from the hot water heater.
Was this Answer Helpful ?The unit mounts on the hot water line at your water heater. Then a recirculating valve is mounted under a sink farthest from the water heater. The water actually circulates very slowly from the hot water side to the cold water side. You get instant hot water at that sink in about 3 seconds. The draw back is that the cold water side is luke warm for about 10 seconds. NOTE: The recirculating valve seems to have about a two year life. A new valve is about $40.00 and Lowes does not sell them. Also, if you have two sinks far from the water heater, you may want to purchase a second valve. It can be purchased on line. For a second valve, you will need a valve kit, which includes the hoses and fittings.
Was this Answer Helpful ?No, the water is recirculated using the cold water supply. When you connect the pump you'll put a small manifold type valve at the furtherst sink's supply tube (under the sink), then magically it all works! Good luck
