Can I run this pump using a heavy duty extension cord? Do I need a return line running to my hot water heater to use this?

Yes you can use the unit with an extension cord, it does need the same gauge wiring. You do not need a return line the sensor valve , which is included will provide a connection to the cold water line for recirculating the water.
