Can it attach to a joist beam from only one side? My fan location has the beam going from one side (not the center).


No, the product should not be modified or drilled for attachment to the side of a joist. This would not be a safe installation for a fan, or heavy fixture. The 294 box and bracket is the recommended product for installation on the side of a joist.
