Will this work as an extension box over and existing single box?


No, this will not work as an extension box. Raco does make a 1 1/2" deep 1900 extension, but I don't believe Lowes stocks them.

We do not recommend such an installation, the box is not designed to be secured in such a manner and the installation most likely does not adhere to local codes. We offer an extension ring model #8203 that is also 1-1/2 inches deep, with 8 1/2 inch knockouts and 4 3/4 inch knockouts.
