I used this putty to repair a large gouge in our 143 year old red oak floor. I didn’t realize it would not harden. Can I coat it with polyurethane?

Minwax answer does not make rational sense. If peeling occurs when putting polyurethane over wood putty then also when putting wood putty over polyurethane it will not adhere. It cannot be "not adhering" in one case and "adhering" in the other case, it's the same materials interface.

Hello. This is not recommended. Since our Wood Putty does not harden, there will be issues if anything is applied over it-including peeling, extended drying, and producing hazy/cloudy look with our finishes. Regards, Minwax Customer Service
