I would not. I used Zinsser primer in mine and ruined my pump!

Can this sprayer sprayer athletic field paint which is extremely thick,

It depends. Not all oils are the same. 1- yes the sprayer can spray thicker oil paints and primers without issue, its a strong unit, this is not a toy disposable unit like the 130 dollar versions. 2- Certain oil paints have carriers that may be flammable or result in significant static build up THAT WILL SHOCK YOU in the cordless unit. You would have to know your product. Hot solvents as they are called are not recommended (anything that will burn). I tried to spray Sherman Williams Pro Block oil based primer and I thought my gun was broken. It was like getting hit with a small taser. Lacquers are another example. For certain tasks an HVLP is a better option. In terms of output, this thing kills most all HLVPs I have used for speed and coverage, although the HLVPs will produce a smoother or at least finer finish, but that really has a lot to do with how your paint levels. Hope that helps.
