how far away does the motion sensing work? Does it sense a person walking close or does it have to be a hand waved within a foot or so?

Hello Valued Customer, thank you for your question. This depends on how you have the module mounted. The black portion of the module is what senses motion, so if you have it facing the ground, you will probably have to use your hand to trigger the motion.
