It's very easy for a short person to use. They have a wand that rolls it up and down. Depending on how high you mount the roller depends how hard it is for you to reach. For a typical 8 a 9 foot high installation the wand is plenty long for you to reach it. I'm only 5'3" ish.

The crank hangs down about 45 inches from the top side. I am 5 ft 5 inches and it is level with me. I don't reach up at all. It is a stick and at the bottom it has a rotating handle that raises and lowers shade.

Yes. The crank comes down far enough that it shouldn't be a problem.. it can be on either the right or left side, depending oh how you mount the shade.
