What are PVC trim boards used for on a house?

PVC trim boards are used anywhere traditional wood trim would go, like around windows and doors, along rooflines, porch columns and fascia. They resist rot, insects and moisture, so they’re ideal for exterior applications, high-splash areas and spots where painted wood trim tends to peel or decay.

Can PVC trim boards be painted, and what kind of paint should I use?

PVC trim boards can be painted to match siding or accents. Use a high-quality 100% acrylic exterior latex paint, clean the surface first, lightly scuff glossy areas, and follow the manufacturer’s recommended light‑reflectance value range to avoid excessive heat buildup on darker colors.

How do you cut and install PVC trim boards?

To cut and install PVC trim boards, use standard woodworking tools, support the board fully, and then fasten with corrosion‑resistant screws or nails into the framing. Leave small expansion gaps at joints, glue or seal seams with PVC-compatible adhesive and use filler or plugs to conceal fasteners for a smooth finish.

What size PVC trim boards do I need for exterior windows and doors?

For exterior windows and doors, many homeowners choose PVC trim boards in 1 x 4, 1 x 6 or 5/4 x 4 dimensions, depending on the look and siding thickness. Measure existing casing width, consider corner details and pick a thickness that sits flush or slightly proud of the cladding.
