Control the Flow With Downspout Extension

If you're refreshing the landscaping around your house, a downspout diverter or extension can be helpful in preserving your flower beds by directing rainwater from the gutters away from your house. Instead of water pouring from your downspout and washing away your mulch or stones, a low-profile downspout extension can divert water elsewhere.

For plants that require more water, you can use a downspout diverter to direct the water to the area of your garden that needs the most moisture. Downspout elbows allow you to easily navigate around plants, corners and landscape edging. A splash stone at the end of your downspout can help protect your lawn from erosion.

If you'd like to capture that rainwater to use for watering your lawn or garden later in the year, consider installing a rain barrel. Rain barrels collect water from a diverted and modified downspout. Check local and state regulations before installing a rain barrel, as they're illegal in some areas, while others actually offer a financial incentive if you collect rainwater. For more information, see our guide — How to Buy, Install and Use a Rain Barrel.
