There are many uses for wooden dowel rods around the home, as well as
woodworking projects and fun crafts. Wooden dowels are available in various
diameters and lengths — some are rounded, square or have grooved edges.
Different styles of dowel rods are suited to different uses.
Short, grooved dowels are a great option for joining two pieces of wood
without nails or screws. The grooves allow for better adhesion with wood glue
when you apply it to the dowel before tapping it into place to secure two
pieces of wood. The dowels are commonly made of poplar, oak, birch and ash.
Round dowels are great to use as handles, while square dowels are great for
making model furniture and boats.
A dowel jig kit contains a dowel jig, drill bit and dowels to help you
make precise holes. The dowel jig serves as a guide for you to drill accurate
dowel holes in pieces of wood to join them together. The dowel holes should be
around one-third to one-half the thickness of the piece of wood you're
drilling.
