Treating the surface with Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner helps prevent streaks and blotches by evening out the absorption of oil-based stains
Use on any wood but is especially necessary when working with soft or porous woods like pine, alder, birch, and maple
Penetrates the grain of the wood to promote uniform acceptance of oil-based stains
Coats - normally 1, but additional coats may be applied on highly absorbent woods
Cleanup - mineral spirits or paint thinner, following manufacturer’s safety instructions

Perfect prep for raw wood

I had a surface partially finished, partially raw after sanding and wanted to make sure it would finish even. Prestaining is a simple concept; just brush this in the raw area until it no longer absorbs and starts to pool instead (obviously on vertical surfaces, it will run so have a drop cloth or drip tray ready), leave 10-15 minutes then use a clean lint free rag to wipe away all the excess. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Refinished vintage family hutch. Did a custom color by mixing weathered oak with rustic beige. Used prestain conditioner and poly finish. Very happy with how it turned out. The stain went on easy no blotches.
