Poplar Newel Posts
I received two newel posts in one box with no packaging so they were banging against each other. Both are damaged. A large divot on a straight edge of an interior newel post is unacceptable. They're being returned but I'm anxious that products are picked and shipped with no quality review, especially with project deadlines!

Expensive 4ft piece of wood
At over $60, it's a nice but very expensive 3.5"x3.5" post. If it came with the hardware to install, or a slide-box that could slip over the base to hide our hardware after installing, it may be worth the cost but... it's a glorified post. We needed something that worked upon receiving it and this wasn't it.

Ready for paint
The joints all look good, nice square corners and seem plenty smooth for painting. The top has about a half an inch of bevel all the way around. They were damaged a bit in shipping but at no fault of the posts.

How is stil usually installed on stair tread. is it installed with a shoe on top of stair (flat surface)?. or screwewd into top of stair?.
