Add an Accent Wall
One of the best ways to bring some style to your living room is by adding an accent wall. Whether you choose the wall behind your couch or TV, you’ll paint, panel or wallpaper it so it contrasts the other walls in the room.
When adding an accent wall, be sure to use colors and styles that complement your home’s overall look. A wall with rustic wood decorative wall panels would work well in a farmhouse-style home. For a modern home, add wainscoting to a wall in the living room to incorporate a touch of class. To make a wall stand out, consider adding shiplap to it.
Another way you can create an accent wall is to use a contrasting paint color. If your living room is gray, paint one wall a solid, bold color, like navy blue or burgundy. You can also make a statement with a dark shade of gray to contrast three light-colored gray walls. If you want to add patterns to your accent wall, consider painting stripes or using decals.
Install Floating Shelves
Adding floating shelves to your walls provides a nice aesthetic touch and also gives you space for storage. These shelves use bolts drilled directly into the wall to provide a sturdy space to place picture frames, books or house plants. You can get floating shelves in a variety of sizes, colors and materials. Options range from pine and chestnut shelves to gray and black shelves and more.
Try installing multiple floating shelves at different heights to create visual interest on an otherwise blank wall.
Utilize Mirrors
A recent trend in living room wall décor is using mirrors. Mirrors do a great job of reflecting light and brightening a room. Try to place them where they’ll catch sunlight but not produce glare. And, if you want your mirror to do more than just allow you to check your appearance, consider putting it behind your house plants to reflect the lush green.
Be sure to choose a size that makes sense for your room. If you’re using a mirror in a modern-style home, you may choose a large mirror to make a bold statement. For a farmhouse look, consider a small antique mirror as part of an accent wall.
Curate a Gallery Wall
Artwork and photos have been used to dress up walls for a long time. Many contemporary decorators are adding gallery walls featuring multiple pictures with a similar theme or color scheme.
Your gallery wall’s theme is up to you and your personal taste. You can use family, nature or scenic photos. Another option is using wall art prints. These pictures and frames don’t all have to be the same size. You can alternate sizes and styles. To make a true gallery wall, use anywhere from four to six pictures. Add a Personal Touch
The best home décor reflects your personal style. Choose items that mean something to you.
For example, if you love to travel, you can decorate your home to reflect that. Try creating an accent wall or curated shelf that shows off images and souvenirs from your travels. Use bold color combinations and patterns that draw inspiration from styles across the globe. To create a fun, lively space, paint unique patterns on walls or incorporate artwork that shows anything from the Eiffel Tower to the Amazon rainforest. If you want a classy way to give off a global traveler vibe, consider adding antique maps.
Another colorful option is to decorate your wall with musical instruments. This is a great choice for musicians and instrument collectors, but anyone can take this approach. If you don’t currently have instruments to display, consider searching for antique ones at garage sales, flea markets or online vendors to save money and find inspiration.
