How to Remove a Popcorn Ceiling

Removing the popcorn-ceiling texture can increase the value of your home, reduce lighting discoloration and make future renovations easier. The process can take a while, but it’s something you can do yourself.

Caution

Ceilings applied before 1980 may contain asbestos. If your building was built before 1980 or you suspect your ceiling contains asbestos, call a professional before removing the popcorn ceiling.

Preparation

First choose a test area on the ceiling to determine whether the ceiling is painted. Painted texture is more difficult to remove, while normal texture spray comes off more easily. If it’s painted, you’ll need to use a paint stripper instead of water. Be sure to follow the paint stripper instructions for use and safety, including use of eye protection and a respirator. Make sure the area has good ventilation.

Refinishing

With the texture gone, you may notice some gouges, nicks or dents in the ceiling. You’ll need to repair any damage before refinishing the ceiling.
