Plank Headboard

Print the patterns (Plank Headboard Top Patterns) required for your headboard size (Project Diagram, Drawing 1) and cut them out. Spray adhesive on the backs of the patterns and attach them at the top ends of the planks. Cut the planks to shape with a jigsaw.

Sand the outside curves with a power sander and 120-grit sandpaper. Keep the sander moving around the corner to create a smooth flowing shape.

For the inside curves, wrap sandpaper around a 1-1/2-inch-diameter dowel to shape the curves. Sand the remaining flat surfaces of the planks smooth with a sander.

Cut a 1/8-inch-diameter dowel into 2-inch-long pieces to use as spacers. Place the planks in sequence on a large, flat work surface (Project Diagram, Drawing 1). Align the bottom edges of the planks and position a spacer dowel between each plank.

Position the cleats (Project Diagram, Drawing 3) on the back of the planks and secure. Drill countersunk pilot holes and drive 1-1/4-inch flathead screws into the cleat and planks.

For an alternative to stain, paint the headboard a rich red (Heirloom Red, #1010-3). Then sand off corners and edges for a worn look.

For contrast against colorful walls, choose a natural finish with three coats of satin polyurethane. Sand lightly between coats.

Try a white painted finish (Ultra White, #7006-24) to create a bold profile against dark painted walls.
